Hotel Room Safety Tips

Daily Snaps | July 1, 2021

After traveling, one the first things I want to do when I get into my hotel room is plop down on the bed. I'm not alone here, right?!

Before you do that though, is your room secure? Do follow these hotel room safety tips?

  • Those maps on the back of the hotel door are there for reason. They let you know where the nearest exit and staircase is in case of an emergency. But don't just read the map, go scope out the exits for yourself so you have visual of where they are and physically walk the route. This is also a great way to get your kids involved so they to know where the exits are.

  • You want to make your room seem like it's occupied even though you may be off exploring the area. Put out the privacy signs that say, "do not disturb" and turn on a light.

  • Always make sure the door closes behind you and once it does, lock the door. And not just the deadbolt, use all the locks on the door including the door latches.

  • For added security, you can pick up a portable door lock so even with a keycard, the door can't be opened. I love this option for adjoining doors, if you have roommates, and even an Airbnb.

  • Another security option you can use is a door stop with an alarm; however, they can be hit or miss. It really depends on the floor of your hotel room and the gap under the door.

  • If you're heading out for the day secure your valuables. Most hotels have in-room safes, so use them. Just don't forget to get your valuables upon checking out. You can also bring your own travel safe that way if the hotel room doesn’t have one, you’ve got another option.

  • If you carry any self-defense tools & travel with them, keep them close and/or on-body. I always travel with my pocketknife & flashlight. I’ll bring other self-defense tools like pepper spray, TASER, or my firearm depending on where I'm traveling too. Just remember to always check the state laws of the where you are traveling for any restrictions they might have.

A lot of these may be obvious to you but you'd be surprised at how even the simplest in-room safety measures get overlooked.
